NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CHILE PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19990405 Biographical Note

Juan Larrain, the new Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Larrain was the Deputy Representative of Chile to the United Nations from 1994 to 1999. He also served as Deputy Representative of Chile to the Security Council from 1996 to 1997.

From 1992 to 1994, Mr. Larrain served as Consul-General of Chile in New York. In 1991, he served as Head of the First Commercial Mission of Chile to Ireland, and, from 1991 to 1992, as Deputy Director of Multilateral Economic Affairs. From 1988 to 1990, Mr. Larrain was Deputy Chief of the Chilean Mission to the United Kingdom. He has also been active in the Organization of American States (OAS), serving as his country's Deputy Chief of Mission to the OAS from 1983 to 1987.

Mr. Larrain attended grammar and high school at the German School and Military Academy in Chile. In 1965, Mr. Larrain obtained a Bachelor's degree in political and administrative sciences from the University of Chile. He attended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomatic Academy.

His academic activities included serving as assistant professor of contemporary history in the Catholic University of Chile's School of Journalism from 1964 to 1965, and as professor of contemporary history in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Diplomatic Academy from 1978-1979. During those years he was also editor of Diplomacia, the official magazine of the Diplomatic Academy.

Born in Santiago, Chile, on 29 August 1941, Mr. Larrain is married to Marial Cruchaga Belaunde and has four children.
