INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE STARTS E-MAIL NOTIFICATION OF PRESS COMMUNIQUÉS

19990302 THE HAGUE, 1 March (ICJ) -- The International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, today launched an e-mail notification system for press communiqués posted on its website, providing the public with up-to-date notice of new information.

Subscribers to the service, which is free, will receive an e-mail each time a new press communiqué is issued by the Court. The e-mail will indicate the title, the date and the Internet address of the press communiqué.

To register for the notification service, visit the Court's website (http://www.icj-cij.org) and click on "Subscribe to e-mail notification of press communiqués".

The Court's website, on which its Judgments, Advisory Opinions and Orders are posted shortly after being handed down, features general information on the Court, its composition (biographies and photographs of the Judges) and its functioning (Statute and Rules), the written and oral pleadings in many of its cases, press communiqués, speeches by the President and data on the bases of jurisdiction. It is equipped with a search engine and updated daily. Recent additions have included summaries of past decisions (back to 1946), the Annual Report of the Court and a catalogue of publications.

The website, which was launched in September 1997, currently receives more than half a million hits per month from law professionals, lecturers, students, government officials, journalists and the general public.
