NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19981123 Biographical Note Jemar Haji Ampal, the new Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan today.

Since 1996 he has been Private Secretary to his country's Minister for Foreign Affairs. He began his public career in the Department of Education, in 1978, moving six years later to the Foreign Ministry as a Diplomatic Officer, a post he held until 1989.

He was then appointed Deputy Director in the Department of Education at the ministry, a post he held until becoming Deputy Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations in 1993.

Mr. Ampal received a Bachelor of Education degree from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom in 1978, and a Masters degree in International Public Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, United States, in 1993.

Mr. Ampal, who is married, was born on 18 February 1954.
