ACTIVITIES OF SECRETARY-GENERAL IN WESTERN SAHARA 8 - 9 NOVEMBER

The Secretary-General travelled from Mauritania to Western Sahara in the afternoon of Sunday, 8 November. He was welcomed at the airport by the Moroccan Minister of the Interior, Driss Basri, and by senior officials of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

In the morning of Monday, 9 November, he visited MINURSO headquarters in Laayoune, where he was briefed on the work of the mission by its senior members. He later addressed the United Nations staff (see Press Release SG/SM/6788) and took coffee with them in the MINURSO cafeteria. That morning, he also met with Ambassador Yilma Tadesse, senior representative of the Observer Mission of the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

Minister Driss Basri hosted a luncheon. In the afternoon the Secretary-General met with Saharan Chiefs and other notables, to whom he delivered a message of hope (see Press Release SG/SM/6789). He gave a press conference before departure to Marrakesh.
