SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS THELMA O'CON-SOLORZANO AS DIRECTOR OF UN INFORMATION CENTRE IN TOKYO

19981111 Biographical Note Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Thelma O'Con-Solorzano as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo. She takes up her duties on 15 November.

Ms. O'Con-Solorzano joined the United Nations in 1968. Prior to her latest appointment in Tokyo, she served as Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Mexico (1994-1998); United Nations Representative and Resident Coordinator in Armenia (1992-1994); and United Nations Information Centre Director in Australia (1987-1992), Argentina (1980-1987), El Salvador (1976-1977) and Colombia (1974-1976).

From 1976 to 1980, Ms. O'Con-Solorzano served as a Political Officer in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs at United Nations Headquarters. She was also an Information Officer in the Non-Governmental Organization Section of the Department of Public Information in 1974, and a Protocol and Liaison Officer in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General from 1968 to 1974.

From 1966 to 1967, Ms. O'Con-Solorzano served with the Permanent Mission of Nicaragua to the United Nations.

Ms. O'Con-Solorzano has a Masters degree from New York University. She has studied at the Institute of Political Sciences in Paris, the University of Pittsburgh, El Colegio de México and the Universidad Femenina de México. During her tenure in Mexico City, she taught international relations at the Universidad del Valle de México.

Ms. O'Con-Solorzano is Nicaraguan and has a son.
