NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF ARMENIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19980121 Biographical Note Movses Abelian, the new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, he was Armenia's Charge d'affaires to the United Nations. Following his assignment to the Organization in 1993, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Working Group of Experts on Financial and Legal Matters during the General Assembly's forty- eighth session. During the Assembly's fiftieth session, he served as Vice- Chairman of its Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary).

Mr. Abelian began his career in 1989 as Assistant Professor and Vice Dean of the Department of Applied Mathematics of Yerevan State University, where he became Associate Professor in 1991. He holds a degree in applied mathematics from that university (1985), as well as a Ph.D, in the same field, from Moscow State University (1988). From 1992-1993, he also studied foreign economic relations at New York University.

Born in Yerevan in 1963, Mr. Abelian is married and has one son.
