NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF NICARAGUA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19970122 biographical note Enrique Paguaga Fernández, the new Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan yesterday.

Mr. Paguaga Fernández began his diplomatic career as Deputy Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations (1973-1978). He has represented his country at various international conferences, including the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (New York, 1977).

Before his current appointment, Mr. Paguaga Fernández, since 1992, served as a translator and interpreter to the Supreme Court of the State of New York. From 1979 to 1992, he was a translator, interpreter and editor for the Berlitz Translation Service, International Technical Translation, Foreign Translation Center, in New York.

Prior to his diplomatic service, he pursued an academic career. He was a teacher of Spanish language and literature, Latin American History and European History at the Latin American Institute of New York (1961-1963 and 1967-1969); teacher of French and Latin at Saint Hilda's and Saint Hugh's High School, New York (1963-1964); and teacher in the bilingual programme at P.S. No. 87, New York (1969-1972). He was also a textbook editor and writer for the Regents Publishing Company of New York (1965-1968).

Mr. Paguaga Fernández has published articles in various newspapers and magazines, including La Prensa, Managua, Nicaragua; La República, San José, Costa Rica; Diario las Américas, Miami, Florida; El Nacional and El Universal, Caracas, Venezuela; Ahora! and Listin Diario, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Born in Jinotepe, Nicaragua, on 24 July 1937, Mr. Paguaga Fernández holds a law degree from the University of Salamanca, Spain (1960). He has also attended the following: Instituto Pedagógico La Salle (Managua); French Language and Civilization Course, University of Paris (1958); and courses in classical civilization and languages, City University of New York (1971).

Mr. Paguaga Fernández is married and has four children.
