 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A child who hasn\u2019t eaten for days, too weak to cry.<\/p>\n

A father counting the last coins in his pocket.<\/p>\n

A mother sifting through rubble to find food.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Searching not only for something to feed her family, but for hope that one day war will end.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is not just one family\u2019s story, it is the story of an entire generation on the brink of being lost to war and starvation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, rates of hunger and food insecurity remain alarmingly high.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 2024, roughly 673\u00a0million people faced hunger.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And about 2.3\u202fbillion endured moderate or severe food insecurity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That is billions wondering where their next meal will come from.<\/p>\n

Billions having to see their children go to bed hungry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

All this while the world wastes, on average, over 1 billion meals every single day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In many cases, food is even discarded directly from the supermarket shelves.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The crisis of hunger is not a lack of food; it is entirely preventable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Dear Ministers,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hunger and poverty are not just consequences of war.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These scourges persist in the South and North, developing and developed countries alike.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Allow me to make three specific points at the beginning regarding our shared responsibility \u2014 and shared interest \u2014 in fighting hunger and poverty:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First, we are seeing new epicenters of hunger and poverty emerging as a result of the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I visited the Sahel region, I stood in 53-degree Celsius heat among sand and rocks, I could hardly breathe \u2014 where, fifty years ago, cotton once grew.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Local farmers told me how the rains no longer come when they used to, the wells have run dry, the harvests have withered.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mothers now ration the little millet they have left.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is not just one farm, or one country\u2014it is the new frontline of insecurity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rising temperatures are fueling food crises globally.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But we are not here today to simply admire the problem, we are here to share solutions, because the future still lies in our hands.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If we continue like this, it is estimated that if the planet warms by two degrees — 189 million more people could face food insecurity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But if some continue to doubt or boycott the climate crisis altogether and the planet rather warms by four degrees — instead of 189 million facing food insecurity, that number could reach 1.8 billion, one in every eight people alive today.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But, there is also a positive side, which is that it still lies in our hands to change course.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If we combine our efforts to fight the climate crisis and live up to the promises we made in the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, the number of people susceptible to poverty could be reduced by several hundred million by 2050.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fighting the climate crisis and standing up for social justice to fight hunger is deeply connected; both are purely in our hands.<\/p>\n

This is still not our goal of no poverty, but it is a situation we can handle if we also join forces on adaptation as well as loss and damage, areas in which we are also not simply powerless bystanders.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For example, the women in the Sahel, who I met, are able to grow crops and feed their families thanks to the support of the international community through solar-powered drip irrigation systems that cut water use by up to 50 percent, and, if connecting it to weather forecasts, to grow food even in the warmest surroundings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Initiatives like this, combining fighting the climate crisis, our new answers of technology and fighting hunger and poverty, should be in the interest of everyone.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because hunger and poverty are not contained by borders.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their consequences cascade across regions, across regions, across continents.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, second, hunger and poverty are drivers of displacement are also part of our bigger global responsibility.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When you see your child too weak to even cry out for food, when fields turn to dust, or when bakeries on the frontlines of conflict are deliberately targeted, people are left with no other option but to move.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is estimated that every 1 percent increase in food insecurity drives nearly 2 percent more people to migrate.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Again, this is not a choice. Families do not want <\/em>to leave their homes, their communities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is a last resort.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And large-scale displacement puts pressure on neighboring states, straining resources and testing governance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, ending hunger and poverty is not merely an act of charity, it is a matter of security and self-interest for all countries.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But the story doesn\u2019t end there.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hunger does not just follow insecurity and conflict. It also fuels them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When I met local people in Mali, they told me how young farmers, with fields barren and pockets empty, often join extremist groups.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not out of ideology, but again out of survival.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thus begins a vicious cycle: climate insecurity leads to hunger and poverty; hunger and poverty spur migration and conflict, and conflict deepens hunger and poverty once more.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This cycle threatens our entire sustainable development agenda, not just SDG2 on Zero Hunger.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because when we fail on hunger and poverty, we undermine the foundation of all progress\u2014from education and equality to peace and climate action.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that leads me to my third and final point, which is on the need to integrate hunger throughout global processes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I commend Brazil\u2019s leadership in launching the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty and for reminding the world that without defeating hunger and poverty, no society can grow or thrive.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This week\u2019s Second World Summit for Social Development is our chance to renew global resolve to tackle this issue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Doha Declaration calls for holistic strategies to confront multidimensional poverty, hunger, and malnutrition by strengthening resilience, financing, and social protection.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It also links to our efforts in the Paris Climate Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sevilla Commitment to close financing gaps for social development, and most recently, the Pact for the Future, which calls for a systemic transformation of food systems to eliminate food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These are not siloed agendas, they all underscore that human security is the foundation of global security.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Besides our medium- and long-term strategies\u2014which we need because we can\u2019t change the root causes of this crisis overnight\u2014we should still not forget to focus also on immediate action when, as we sit here today, starvation is growing in certain regions, especially in war zones.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without the World Food Programme, last year alone, 125 million people would have lacked life-saving food assistance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So we have to remember, every cut we are making, your government, Member States, are currently making to international organisations, always remember that these affect real peoples\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It affects the child who hasn\u2019t eaten for days, too weak to cry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The father counting the last coins in his pocket.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The mother sifting through rubble to find food.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And remember that we \u2014 the UN, governments, and partners \u2014 have made real progress, if we do not cut but rather join forces.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Extreme poverty has declined from a high of 2 billion people in 1990 \u2014 a third of the global population at the time\u2014 to about 800 million today.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In a world of plenty\u2014where there should be more than enough to go around\u2014ensuring that everyone, everywhere has enough to eat is entirely possible.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That is why today\u2019s meeting is so important\u2014to move from pledges to practical action, from statements to solutions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Because a world free from hunger and poverty is not a distant aspiration, it is within reach, if we work for it together.<\/p>\n
