Opening of the 80th Session of the General Assembly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tuesday, 9 September 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The 80th session of the General Assembly is no ordinary session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

80 years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Longer than the average human lifespan.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Normally this would be a moment to celebrate but are we really in a mood for celebration.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Can we celebrate while parents in Gaza are watching their children starve?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While Afghan girls are banned from school, prevented from having a normal childhood.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While grandfathers in Kharkiv are sheltering in bathtubs, fearful of drones and missiles.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While women in Darfur are hiding their daughters from being raped.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While Pacific islanders are watching seas rise and waves lap against their homes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And while 808 million people are still trapped in extreme poverty, worried about how to simply feed their family.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Instead of celebrating, one might rather ask: where is the United Nations, which was created to save us from hell?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Where is the United Nations as conflicts spread, as our planet burns, as human rights are trampled?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our answer must be clear:<\/p>\n

We are not giving up.<\/p>\n

We are here.<\/p>\n

We see you.<\/p>\n

Even when we face setbacks and frustrations.<\/p>\n

When diplomacy fails us and consensus eludes us.<\/p>\n

We will unite to deliver for the people of the world.<\/p>\n

We will unite to defend the principles of this institution.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If girls in Afghanistan or parents in Gaza can wake up – in the darkest hours of life – and push forward, then so can we.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We owe it to them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But, dear excellencies, we owe it also to ourselves because there is simply no alternative.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The world needs the United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In no way would we be better off without it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This remains the only organization capable of bringing together every country in the world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The only one capable of acting on a truly global scale.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The only one with worldwide political legitimacy and moral authority.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yes, our world is in pain. Indeed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But imagine how much more pain there would be without the United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Just last year alone,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without UNICEF, 26 million children would not have received an education.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without the World Food Programme, nearly 125 million people would have lacked life-saving food assistance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without the UN Refugee Agency and the International Organization for Migration – over 62 million people – would not have received critical aid.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Without the World Health Organization, 70 million people would not have benefited from mental health services.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And without ICAO \u2013 almost 5 billion airplane passengers, including all of us \u2013 would not have arrived safely at our destination, not even here in New York.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Even the biggest economies cannot handle everything all by themselves.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It has been said, \u201cIf the UN did not exist, we would have to invent it.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thankfully, we do not have to invent it. Our grandmothers and grandfathers did just that, for us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our job today – 80-years later – is to keep it alive, to strengthen it, and to make it fit for the 21st century.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That is why, dear excellencies, this is no ordinary session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is the year to adapt, to evolve, and to build the United Nations we need for the next 80-years \u2013 for the lifetimes of our children.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is a moment to show eight billion people around the world why this Organisation still matters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why they are right to look to the streaming blue flag of the United Nations as a source of hope.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yes, it will not be easy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It requires courage to stand up.<\/p>\n

Courage to seize the processes already under way.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Processes with the power to reshape and reinvigorate this Organisation so that it is capable of realizing its core objectives, to deliver on peace, on security, on sustainable development, and on human rights.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That includes building on the successful adoption of the Pact for the Future and ensuring its implementation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It includes advancing the UN80 reform agenda and ensuring that this is more than a cost-cutting exercise. Reform must be a means to increase effectiveness, not an end in itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Throughout my candidacy and in bilateral meetings, one message came through consistently and clearly: the General Assembly must focus on its mandates, to deliver on its commitments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That means less procedure for its own sake and more delivery on substance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It includes selecting who will lead this, our organization into the future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The selection of the next Secretary-General is one of the key processes during this 80th session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our choice will send a powerful message about who we are, and whether we truly serve all the peoples of the world, of which, everywhere in the world, half are women and girls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And to be frank, as only touched upon in the Pact for the Future, one might wonder how in 80 years not one single woman \u2013 out of 4 billion potential candidates \u2013 has ever served as the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As said, this is not an ordinary session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We stand at a crossroads, a make-OR-break moment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Eight decades of progress and setbacks, of achievement and failure, but also of renewal and resolve, have brought us here.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Now we need the will and ambition to turn promise into action, promise into practice, and commitments into measurable progress.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Of course, history is rarely made all at once, in one big splash.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It comes more often in small steps and big strides alike.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the deliberate choices we, ourselves, make each day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In building one school after another, until 26 million children are able to attend.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In handing out food packets to the hungry, until 125 million people are fed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In installing solar panels, one by one, until entire regions starved for power are electrified.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And yes, also in the very tiny steps, practical steps, we can take ourselves in this hall to speak less and act more.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As I stand here today and open the 80th session, I commit to serving each of the 193 Member States of this Organization equally.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I will be impartial, a bridge builder, guided by only one thing–our United Nations Charter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It will be my North Star.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I will always act with the belief that we are, truly, better together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As such, my door will always be open.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I will consult, listen, and ensure every voice is heard\u2014including those too often overlooked.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank you, the Membership, for the trust you have placed in me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank my predecessor for the support afforded to my Office by him and also by his wonderful team.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I applaud President Philemon Yang for his patience, his wisdom, and his steady leadership in guiding the 79th session through a year of significant accomplishments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The spirit of this milestone session and its High-Level Week is: Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It sounds easy, but it is hard work, because we are living not only in difficult times, but we all know, in times of disunity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Therefore, I encourage everyone to embrace the theme, not only at this year\u2019s General Debate, but also throughout the work of the upcoming session. Throughout the next weeks and months.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This space \u2013 this Hall \u2013 was created exactly for that purpose, to sort out our differences, peacefully, together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our predecessors came together 80-years ago in San Francisco to establish this organization, also in a moment of despair.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The world came together, in 2015, after conferences of failure and failure, to adopt the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And we came together, only last year, to adopt the Pact for the Future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These are not exceptions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They reflect an understanding, deep within us, that to forge a better future we must work together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Be better, together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us not re-learn the hard lessons.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us instead come together, especially in the moments we would like to give up, to take the easy way out, to respond to those desperate calls from around our world.<\/p>\n

Let us come together to bring relief to the hungry children of Gaza.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To give Afghan girls their future back.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To deliver peace to the people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To provide safety to Sudanese women and girls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To save small island states from the climate catastrophe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And to deliver on the promise of ending poverty in all its forms.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This 80th session is our chance.<\/p>\n

Our chance to make it, not break it.<\/p>\n

To live up to the promises of the Charter.<\/p>\n

For today, for tomorrow, and for the next 80-years.<\/p>\n

Showing that we are, indeed, better together.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thank you.<\/p>\n
