Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

I welcome you all to this High-level Forum on a Culture of Peace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Allow me to take this opportunity to express my deep appreciation to the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh for its steadfast commitment to advancing the resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We convene this High Level Meeting today under the theme of \u201cEmpowering Youth for a Culture of Peace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

This theme is both timely and significant.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It resonates with Security Council Resolution 2250 of 2015, which affirmed the vital role of young people in building and sustaining peace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It also reflects the vision of the Pact for the Future, which recognises the important contributions youth are already making to the advancement of peace and security.<\/p>\n

Make no mistake: young people are not passive beneficiaries of peace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They are leaders, innovators, and agents of change.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Empowering them is one of the most effective ways to ensure that a culture of peace takes root in every society and endures across generations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But that potential can only be realized if we listen to young people, systematically and comprehensively, working alongside them to create meaningful opportunities for their future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Across the globe, youth-led organisations and movements are underscoring their vital role in peace, tolerance, and dialogue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is demonstrating that young people not only imagine a better world, they dedicate themselves to building it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yet, in spite of the clear opportunities, in many places such as Gaza, Haiti, Sudan, and Ukraine, conflict and crises continue to obstruct their efforts and undermine their potential.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

The barriers they face are clear.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Too many lack access to quality education.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Too many are marginalised by social norms.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Too many are excluded from political decision-making.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Indeed, in conflict zones, young people are often drawn into violence or fall victim to it, perpetuating cycles of instability.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These realities make it urgent to take meaningful steps, and to equip young people with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities they need to participate fully in peacebuilding and conflict prevention.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us treat this Forum as a call to action to build a world that is safe, peaceful, just, inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When young people learn the values of tolerance, empathy, and conflict resolution early in life, they carry those values into adulthood.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This creates future generations with the skills to sustain peace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Education systems must integrate the values of peace, and governments must reflect on \u2013 and support \u2013 the transformative role that young people can play in creating more harmonious societies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As Nelson Mandela once urged: \u201cTo the youth of today, I also have a wish to make: Be the script writers of your destiny and feature yourselves as stars that showed the way towards a brighter future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
