 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank the Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Khaled Khiari, and the Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan, Mr. Rashid Merdov, for their participation in this meeting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Conflicts are spreading.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The use of force is on the rise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The rule of law is under strain, and the multilateral system is facing mounting pressure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is a clear need for a firm and coordinated response.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

One grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

International law provides the framework for our actions.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is up to us to return to diplomacy, invest in dialogue, and restore trust between States.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In September 2024, Member States adopted the Pact for the Future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This marked a renewed commitment to preventive diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Pact identified the need for concrete tools, and Member States pledged to develop mechanisms to that effect.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mechanisms that could advance early warning, confidence-building, crisis response, and sustained dialogue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These efforts are relevant across all levels\u2014subregional, regional, and international.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Establishing \u2018zones of peace\u2019 offer one such approach.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As recognised in Resolution 79\/5, adopted during the 79th session, these zones support cooperation and contribute to broader efforts to maintain peace and security.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Several are already in place.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They include the territories of the Central Asian countries, the South Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Latin America and the Caribbean have also been proclaimed as a zone of peace through regional consensus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These initiatives aim to lower tensions, prevent conflict, and create the space needed for dialogue to take root.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The challenges we face today reinforce the value of preventive diplomacy and dialogue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These tools must remain at the heart of our work.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I encourage Member States to consider how existing zones of peace can be strengthened.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We should also explore new partnerships that extend beyond geographic boundaries and reinforce our shared objectives.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Through cooperation and trust, we can fulfil our responsibility to protect future generations from the catastrophe of war.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us take that responsibility seriously.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us support a global culture of peace.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us stand against violence and build lasting partnerships grounded in trust, mutual respect, and the principles of the United Nations Charter.<\/p>\n
