Turbocharging SDG implementation and closing financing gap at heart of joint meeting convened by President of UN General Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union<\/strong>\u00a0<\/div>\n
New York, 5 February 2025 – Approximately 300 participants\u2014including speakers of parliament, members of parliament, advisers and experts\u2014will gather at the 2025 Parliamentary Hearing at the UN Headquarters in New York on 13 and 14 February 2025. The hearing will focus on scaling up action to achieve\u00a0the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/a>, with a particular focus on closing the financing gap.<\/div>\n
\n

Convened by the President of the UN General Assembly at its 79th<\/sup>\u00a0Session, H.E. Mr. \u00a0Philemon Yang and the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Dr. Tulia Ackson, this joint hearing will examine concrete ways to achieve the 17 SDGs following the adoption of\u00a0the Pact for the Future<\/a>\u00a0and its annexes by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024.<\/p>\n

Financing for development is a key\u00a0priority for President Yang<\/a>\u00a0during the 79th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly. Estimates indicate that around $4 trillion additional investment is needed annually for developing countries to achieve the SDGs by 2030.<\/p>\n

Discussions will focus on the decisive actions needed to bridge the financing gap ahead of\u00a0the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0International Conference on Financing for Development<\/a>\u00a0on 30 June to 3 July 2025 in Spain.<\/p>\n

Parliaments are increasingly recognised as crucial actors in implementing UN agreements. This hearing will provide an opportunity \u2014starting with parliaments\u2014 to strengthen institutions, engage all stakeholders and mobilize critical financing from both public and private sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Both President Yang and President Ackson will deliver opening remarks, followed by a series of panel discussions on critical issues such as tax reform, aid effectiveness, and challenges in international trade.<\/p>\n
