Remarks by the President of the General Assembly,
Mr Philemon Yang
At the Preparatory meeting to the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution
Friday, 23 May 2025 10:00 AM, Trusteeship
[As Delivered]
Your Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I commend France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for convening today’s meeting,
and for their tireless efforts as Co-Chairs of the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.
The International Conference, to be held in June, is a crucial opportunity that we must seize to chart an irreversible path towards the implementation of the two-State solution.
It is imperative that this conference succeeds.
I thank the co-chairs of the eight round tables for their work.
These round tables will address key topics and lay the foundation for the Conference’s success.
The international community must reaffirm its unwavering commitment to a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on international law, the United Nations Charter, and relevant United Nations resolutions.
But we must translate commitment into action.
The outcome of the Conference must therefore be concrete and action-oriented, identifying the steps needed to realise the two-State solution.
Your Excellencies,
The horrors we have witnessed in Gaza for over nineteen months should spur us to urgent action to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The devastating cycles of death, destruction, and displacement cannot be allowed to continue.
This conflict cannot be resolved through permanent war, nor through endless occupation or annexation.
It will only end when Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in their own sovereign, independent States, in peace, security, and dignity.
Your Excellencies,
It has been seven decades since the General Assembly first called for a two-State solution.
Since then, the Assembly has reaffirmed its unwavering support for this vision through numerous resolutions.
It is now our collective responsibility to act decisively and actually implement these resolutions.
It is now our responsibility to uphold international law, and honour the principles of the United Nations Charter.
We must restore trust in the United Nations, the international community, and in our commitments to the people of Palestine and Israel.
Let us act now to pave the way for a peaceful settlement of this conflict.
One that honours the legitimate aspirations and rights of both Palestinians and Israelis.
One that ensures a better future for everyone in the Middle East.
Thank you.
