PGA LAUNCHES DIGITAL HANDBOOK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UN UNIVERSITY<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, will launch a publication entitled \u201cAssembly for Peace: A Digital Handbook on the UN General Assembly\u2019s Past Practice on Peace and Security\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n

The launch will take place at the ECOSOC Chamber at 1:15 p.m. today following a GA resolution on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Digital Handbook is an informative tool which outlines the role of the GA in matters of international peace and security. It was produced in partnership with the UN University\u2019s Centre for Policy Research.<\/p>\n

PGA Dennis Francis appreciates the cooperation with the Director of the UN University Centre for Policy Research, Dr. David Passarelli, as well as the invaluable role of the two Co-Chairs of the GA revitalization process, the Permanent Representative of Saint Lucia, H.E. Ms. Menissa Rambally, and the Permanent Representative of Romania, H.E., Mr. Cornel Feruta.<\/p>\n

The handbook is digital and aims to serve delegates, Secretariat staff, students, and members of the public. The digital publication will be available on UN University and the PGA\u2019s website.<\/p>\n

YOUTH REPRESENTATIVES TO SPEAK AT THE OPENING OF THE SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

PGA Francis has sent a letter to Member States informing the name of three youth representatives, who will deliver remarks at the opening segment of the Summit of the Future on 22 September.<\/p>\n

They are Ms. Monica Malith from the Republic of South Sudan, Mr. Ghanim Mohammed al Muftah from the State of Qatar and Ms. Niria Alicia Garc\u00eda from the United States of America.<\/p>\n

In the same correspondence, the PGA expressed that he had the honour to propose that the opening segment also features statements by the President of the Republic of Namibia, H.E. Mr. Nangolo Mbumba, and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, H.E. Mr. Olaf Scholz, in lieu of their national statements from the plenary list of speakers. President Francis intends to put forth this proposal for consideration of Member States tomorrow at the GA plenary meeting.<\/p>\n

In order to accommodate all speakers at the Summit, statements should be limited to five minutes for participating States and three minutes for all other representatives.<\/p>\n

The adoption of the outcome document \u201cPact for the Future\u201d is scheduled to take place at the opening of the Summit of the Future high-level event, at 9 a.m. on 22 September. The GA decided that explanations of vote would not be granted.<\/p>\n

We are making the provisional programme<\/a> for both days available to you as well as the concept notes<\/a> for all four interactive dialogues. You will receive them in your email together with these notes after our press briefing is concluded.<\/p>\n

PGA FRANCIS MEETS WITH PGA-ELECT YANG AS PART OF HANDOVER PROCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Francis met yesterday afternoon with PGA-elect, H.E., Mr. Phil\u00e9mon Yang, in the President\u2019s Office as part of the handover process.<\/p>\n

Mr. Francis issued a post on his X social media account reiterating his full cooperation and that of his team during the transition period.<\/p>\n

President Francis highlighted that his Office is committed to a smooth handover and looks forward to continuing the important work of the General Assembly, ready to support the incoming GA President and his team as preparations for the next session and the Summit of the Future are underway.<\/p>\n

GA TO HOLD PLENARY MEETING ON SEVERAL AGENDA ITEMS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tomorrow, the General Assembly will have a full morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. holding its 107th<\/sup> plenary meeting.<\/p>\n

Member States will discuss and take action on eight draft resolutions with themes ranging from sport for development and peace, enhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 representatives in UN meetings, multilingualism, tackling sexual exploitation and abuse, to the institution of the World Rural Development Day, proposed to take place on each 6 of July.<\/p>\n

Good afternoon, everyone! This is our last week before the press conference by the PGA, which will take place on 9 September at 11 a.m. which will be also the last full day of President Francis in the Office.<\/p>

PGA FRANCIS AND PGA-ELECT YANG TAKE PART IN HANDOVER RETREAT<\/strong><\/p>

The President of the General Assembly (PGA), Mr. Dennis Francis, is taking part today in the 14th<\/sup> Annual General Assembly Retreat under the theme \u201cTowards a Stronger UN General Assembly\u201d.<\/p>

The meeting, which takes place in New York, is being facilitated by the Permanent Mission of Finland with the support of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM). The retreat will include a Q&A session moderated by the Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations, H.E. Ms. Elina Kalkku.<\/p>

In his opening remarks, President Francis highlighted the achievements of his session and unforeseen developments which reminds the entire PGA\u2019s Office that: \u201cThe General Assembly may have a plan, but global events can \u2013 and indeed, do \u2013 significantly alter priorities, sometimes overnight, and determine how the session will unfold.\u201d President Francis believes that \u201ca methodical focus on ensuring a holistic perspective across the priorities\u201d is extremely important given the ongoing global developments and any future challenges.<\/p>

PGA-elect Mr. Phil\u00e9mon Yang also delivered remarks in the session followed by discussions and presentations on the GA revitalization, the Pact for the Future, and cooperation with other parts of the United Nations, among other topics.<\/p>

The purpose of the retreat is to contribute to the revitalization of the General Assembly and provide an opportunity for the elected members to familiarize themselves with the work of the GA.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

GA TO CONSIDER DRAFT RESOLUTION TO ENHANCE PARTICIPATION BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES<\/strong><\/p>

The President of the General Assembly has informed Member States that he intends to submit a draft resolution entitled \u201cEnhancing the participation of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 representatives and institutions in meetings of relevant United Nations bodies on issues affecting them\u201d to the GA for action.<\/p>

Mr. Dennis Francis said that the draft resolution A\/78\/L.106 will be presented in a plenary meeting under agenda item 68 \u201cRights of Indigenous Peoples\u201d to be announced shortly.<\/p>

In February, the PGA appointed two co-facilitators for the consultations on potential further measures to enhance the participation of Indigenous Peoples' representatives and institutions in relevant United Nations meetings on issues affecting them: H.E. Mr. Bob Rae, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations and H.E. Mr. Victor Garcia Toma, Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations. This process includes two Advisers from Indigenous Peoples, Dr. Claire Charters and Mr. Belkacem Lounes, who were appointed in April.<\/p>

If the draft resolution is adopted, the GA will decide on continuing its consideration of possible further measures to enhance the participation of indigenous peoples at its eightieth session and will request the GA President to appoint two co-facilitators from Member States and two advisers from Indigenous Peoples \u201cwith the aim to adopt procedural and institutional steps\u201d. The process shall include consultations with indigenous peoples\u2019 representatives and institutions from all regions of the world as an input to the intergovernmental process.<\/p>
