PGA FRANCIS TO VISIT FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Florida State University (FSU) from 28 to 30 August to deliver a lecture under the Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series\/Engage Your World Series.<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of the lecture is \u201cStrengthening climate action: The role of the United Nations General Assembly in addressing sea-level rise and other climate-induced disasters<\/i>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>The university campus is in the heart of the state capital, Tallahassee. <\/span><\/a>The PGA will address the assembly of students at FSU on sea-level rise, climate action as well as the imperative role of the General Assembly in driving global effort to foster dialogue and support global initiatives in this area.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Francis will pay a courtesy call on Dr. Richard McCullough, President of Florida State University, and hold a separate engagement with students.<\/span><\/p>\n

He will visit Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences Department, at FSU to learn about the research done in the fields of Environmental Science, Geology, Oceanography, and Meteorology to combat the challenges posed by climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

While in Tallahassee, he will hold conversations with some local Government representatives and community members of Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s delegation includes his Deputy Chef de Cabinet and a Communications Adviser.<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel costs for the visit are covered by Florida State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

The PGA and his delegation will return to New York on Friday, 30 August.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GA ADOPTS ORAL DECISION ON SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The General Assembly adopted a draft oral decision under agenda item 121 on the “Question of the equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

The oral decision adopted by consensus outlines the decision of Member States over the immediate continuation of intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in the informal plenary of the General Assembly at its next session. The document also outlines that an Open-ended Working Group on the subject will meet during the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly. <\/span><\/p>\n

The GA President, Mr. Dennis Francis, is chairing the meeting, which is scheduled to finish by 1 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

A total of 14 speakers are inscribed to deliver remarks on behalf of individual Member States and regional groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

GA TO MARK INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Next week, on 4 September, the General Assembly will hold a high-level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests. <\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the General Assembly Hall. <\/span><\/p>\n

PGA Francis will deliver opening remarks and will be followed by Mr. Adedeji Ebo, Director and Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, and other speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting will be webcast by UN TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MEET ON SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM<\/strong><\/p>

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, will preside tomorrow, 27 August, over a plenary meeting under agenda item 121 \"Question of the equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council\u201d.<\/p>

Earlier this month, the PGA indicated in a letter to Member States after informal consultations, his intention to present a draft oral decision for adoption at the plenary meeting of the GA.<\/p>

The meeting will start at 10 a.m. at the General Assembly Hall.<\/p>

Among the points to be acted upon by the GA are:\u00a0 - the immediate continuation of intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in informal plenary of the General Assembly at its seventy-ninth session; convening the Open-ended Working Group on the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council and Other Matters related to the Security Council during the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly, if Member States so decide; Member States will also decide whether to include in the agenda of the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly the item entitled \u201cQuestion of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council.\u201d<\/p>

PGA ISSUES PROVISIONAL PROGRAM OF HIGH-LEVEL PLENARY MEETING OF THE GA TO COMMEMORATE INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS<\/strong><\/p>

The PGA has circulated a letter to Member States with the provisional program of the high-level plenary meeting of the General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests.<\/p>

The meeting is scheduled to take place on 4 September 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the General Assembly Hall, United Nations Headquarters in New York. The actual day is marked on 29 August, each year.<\/p>

Mr. Francis expressed his intention to invite several speakers including\u00a0 representatives of civil society and academia. Among the guests are Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO); Ms. Vivian Okeke, Director of the IAEA Liaison Office in New York; Ms. Shizuka Kuramitsu, Research Assistant, Arms Control Association, and former UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Youth Champion\u00a0 and Professor Sharon Squassoni, Elliott School of International Affairs, The George Washington University.\u00a0They will speak in the second part of the meeting which will start at 10:45.<\/p>

The opening slot will hear remarks from H.E. Mr. Dennis Francis and from Mr. Adedeji Ebo, Director and Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, on behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Member States are encouraged to deliver regional group statements during the commemorative meeting.<\/p>
