\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/em><\/p>\n

Distinguished Delegates,<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Decades ago, the situation in the Middle East marked the first significant crisis for the newly established United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Since then \u2013 for almost the entire lifespan of this Organisation \u2013 peace in the region, and for the people of Palestine in particular, has remained elusive.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, this untenable situation continues to deteriorate at alarming speed \u2013 bringing countless innocent victims into its deadly fold and pushing the region further to the brink of full-scale catastrophe.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While numerous diplomatic efforts and United Nations resolutions have been deployed \u2013 regrettably, none have yet quelled the current cycle of death and destruction.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yet, this is not a moment for the international community to falter or to look away.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If anything, the horrendous events of the last seven months have only hastened the urgency of achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peaceful solution to the situation in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, let us remember the legacy from which we hail.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We stand proudly upon the shoulders of those who \u2013 many decades ago \u2013 recognized their ultimate responsibility to forge a peace that would \u201cbanish the scourge and terror of war for many generations\u201d. [1]<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Those who knew full well the undesirable role that war and violence played in their own lives.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And who made no apologies for imagining \u2013 and indeed building \u2013 a more peaceful world beyond it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They understood the value of international cooperation and sought the active participation of all nations \u2013 large and small \u2013 giving voice to common principles on which they dared to anchor mankind\u2019s hopes for a better future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As today\u2019s United Nations, we cannot, and must not, lose sight of the history we inherit \u2013 or the bold proposition that brought our Organisation into being:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Peace for all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I repeat: Peace for all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This General Assembly is convoked today to pronounce itself within its powers and mandate \u2013 and to uphold the functions and responsibilities bestowed upon it by the United Nations Charter, including under Article 4.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I therefore call upon the membership to purposely assess the situation before us with nothing else in mind, but a commitment to peace as our utmost ambition.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Most immediately, I urge the parties to this conflict \u2013 with the support of those with leverage \u2013 to do their utmost to secure an agreement of ceasefire that will end the suffering, end the bloodshed, free all hostages, protect innocent civilians and ensure immediate, unhindered access of humanitarian aid, without conditions, I repeat: without conditions, for all who are in dire need.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In closing, it is true that \u201clost time is never found.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is also true that we have lost much time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We are, once again, called upon to work for humanity \u2013 and we the peoples, without exception.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To believe in \u201cthe essential goodness\u201d of others \u2013 as Ralph Bunche put it decades ago \u2013 in the understanding that \u201cno problem of human relations is insoluble.\u201d [2]<\/a><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I appeal to all Member States to so comport themselves during the debate as to maintain the dignity of this Chamber and of the Organisation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ultimately, to help bring lasting peace, to save lives and to end violence \u2013 to which we have all dedicated ourselves in the service of the people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I thank you.<\/strong><\/p>\n
