Remarks by the President of the General Assembly,<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n Mr. Dennis Francis,<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n at the International Conference on Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is One Family)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n [As Delivered]<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n 10 October 2023<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n \n Excellencies,<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n Distinguished Delegates,<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I would like to thank the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, and in particular Her Excellency Ms. Ruchira Kamboj, my dear friend, for inviting me to today\u2019s event.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And let me commend your choice of the theme as well\u2013 which is about the concept of\u00a0one world, one family<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 as it aligns well with the principles of\u00a0solidarity and unity<\/b>\u00a0which were also the highlight in my remarks to world leaders during the High-Level Week.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Little did I know, just weeks ago, that the challenges we face would become even more striking in the weeks to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I have spoken clearly in condemning the escalation of violence in the Middle East, and the associated alarming deaths of innocent civilians on both sides.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Clearly, the deteriorating security situation runs contrary \u2013 in any shape and form \u2013 to the concept of one world, one family; and indeed, to the cherished principles of unity and solidarity.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Where we need more peace, we are getting less.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And around the world, people are suffering and increasingly weary of conflict, strife, and vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n From the impact of conflicts to the climate emergency; from pandemics to supply chain disruptions, our era is becoming more volatile by the hour.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And, as always, it is the weak and the vulnerable who are most impacted.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Dear Friends,<\/span><\/i><\/i><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is in times like these \u2013 of great alarm and distress \u2013 that we often find it within ourselves to come together, whether out of the need for solidarity or for solace, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is entirely human to seek out community for support. I therefore deeply appreciate the leadership of India in reminding us of this important truth.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n India\u2019s recent G20 Presidency, centred around the theme of\u00a0Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam<\/i>,<\/b>\u00a0marked a historic milestone and echoed the message of One Earth, One Family, One Future.<\/p>\n \n It was under this theme that India has reminded us of the one, very singular, world that we call home \u2013 and of our responsibility \u2013 nay, of the necessity \u2013 to protect it.<\/p>\n \n As a citizen of a Small Island Developing State myself, I can speak at length about the existential threat posed by climate change. But it is not simply\u00a0my<\/b>\u00a0challenge alone nor my solo threat \u2013 it a common challenge to all of humanity.<\/p>\n \n This is the message that India is sending us today. Big or small, Indian or Pacific, North or South, we are\u00a0all<\/b>\u00a0facing the reality of multiple existential threats together \u2013 and only\u00a0together<\/b>\u00a0will we persevere.
