Remarks by the President of the 78th session of the General Assembly,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n Mr. Dennis Francis,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n at the High Level plenary meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of\u00a0Nuclear<\/span>\u00a0Weapons<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>\n I stand before you today with a stark reminder \u2013\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons pose an\u00a0existential threat<\/b>\u00a0to all humanity.<\/p>\n I wish I were being hyperbolic, but the truth is that the risk of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0annihilation is not a chapter from our past; it is a haunting reality of our present.<\/p>\n Our world is unprecedently fractured, torn by divisions that manifest themselves at every level, even within these hallowed halls.<\/p>\n Reports paint a grim picture, revealing that over the last 15 years, violence has been on the rise at all levels – from interstate conflicts to intrastate strife, from state-sponsored aggression to violent actions by non-state actors.<\/p>\n And the threat of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0force is once again being implied, to our collective shock and horror.\u00a0<\/p>\n This is not just concerning; it is downright terrifying.<\/p>\n There is a domino effect to a\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0armed multipolar world, and the more agitated people and nations become, the higher the risk of stumbling mistakenly into a\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0nightmare.<\/p>\n We should never underestimate the human propensity for destruction.<\/p>\n There is only one path to avoid\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0Armageddon: that is the complete and absolute elimination of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons.<\/p>\n However,\u00a0Excellencies<\/i>,<\/p>\n The architecture of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0disarmament finds itself in a perilous deadlock.<\/p>\n We must transition from the margins of abstract debate to decisive action and rigorous verification on\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0disarmament.<\/p>\n Colleagues,<\/i><\/p>\n Let us reject the fatalistic notion that\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0disarmament is an unattainable dream.<\/p>\n Attaining a world devoid of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons stands as the final stride towards the correct political decision \u2013 a choice for peace, dialogue, and the well-being of humanity.<\/p>\n Here are steps we can take \u2013 and must take \u2013 to advance towards the elimination of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons:<\/p>\n First,<\/b>\u00a0we must all acknowledge that the elimination of\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons is a moral imperative. The strategic goals or interests of any single nation or coalition cannot outweigh the collective aspirations of all people worldwide to lead lives of peace and dignity.<\/p>\n Second,<\/b>\u00a0a global movement against\u00a0nuclear<\/span>\u00a0weapons and proliferation must be galvanised. Engaging young campaigners in this cause can generate the momentum required for concrete and courageous political decisions.<\/p>\n Third,<\/b>\u00a0we must lead by example. Our aim should be no less than complete denuclearization. It is a promise we owe to the present and future generations.
