{"id":254710,"date":"2023-07-05T12:56:48","date_gmt":"2023-07-05T16:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=254710"},"modified":"2023-07-05T12:57:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T16:57:03","slug":"pga-remarks-on-culture-and-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/07\/05\/pga-remarks-on-culture-and-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"PGA remarks on Culture and Sustainable Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.21.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><b>Csaba\u00a0<em>K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em><i>,<\/i>\u00a0President of the 77<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0session of the General Assembly<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><b>&#8212;-<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><b>High-level interactive dialogue on Culture and Sustainable Development<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><b>5 July 2023<a name=\"x__Hlk130296718\"><\/a><\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><b>(As delivered by a GA Vice President)<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Culture is a vehicle for identity, and a catalyst for creativity, and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">It is inseparable from sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">From mitigation to transformation, from economic growth to social inclusion, culture plays an indispensable part in the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">But truly harnessing its potential for reaching the SDGs requires a recognition of the fundamental value of cultures \u2013 and a mindset shift, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Aligning our cultural norms and practices with the tenets of sustainable development will enable the transformation we all need to naturally flourish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">By better integrating traditional practices and sustainability, we give communities the means to feel ownership over their development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Let me share a concrete example.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Indigenous Peoples across the globe have pioneered sustainable land management and climate adaptation for thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">If, today, we couple this wealth of knowledge with science-based data and evidence, we stand a fighting chance of combatting climate change, and of achieving our SDGs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Culture is forever in movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Rather than being static or confined to the past, it adapts to us. It develops with us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Culture bears knowledge, skills, and values, the transformative force of which can bring about real change from our homes to our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We must use our cultures to promote environmental stewardship, social equity, and responsible resource use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Yet, acknowledging the paramount role of culture in sustainable development comes with the need for major policy moves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">First, we should build education systems that strengthen social responsibility and accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Investing in youth and education is a prerequisite to realizing the 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">On the other hand, good education enables learners to appreciate cultural heritage as our common, shared human legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">A legacy which we have to safeguard and protect, as it is one of the most precious of our global public goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Development strategies and policies often fail to account for culture, and its enormous influence on our thinking.<s><\/s><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Indeed, too often we rely solely on economic indicators in our decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Culture needs to be much better embedded in development plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">This requires reliable measuring techniques<span class=\"x_css-0\">, monitoring\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_css-rh820s\">systems,<\/span>\u00a0and data collection methods, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">There are many reasons why it is imperative to cherish culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">And, why concepts such as \u201cBeyond GDP\u201d are so crucial \u2013 precisely because they go beyond GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">They include the inherently social aspects of progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let me share with you a thought of Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Mench\u00fa Tum:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeace cannot exist without justice, justice cannot exist without fairness, fairness cannot exist without development, development cannot exist without respect for the identity and worth of cultures and peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">I invite you to see today\u2019s High-Level Dialogue as a precursor to the SDG Summit \u2013 an opportunity to gauge the role of culture in reaching our 17 Goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_gmail-li1\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">But this meeting is also the perfect moment to set this cultural mindset shift in motion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Not only must our new approach recognize cultures for their true significance, but it should also create an environment conducive to equality and mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-IE\">An environment of determination to make our planet a more inclusive and sustainable place for us all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-IE\">I thank you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si,\u00a0President of the 77th\u00a0session of the General Assembly &#8212;- High-level interactive dialogue on Culture and Sustainable Development 5 July 2023 (As delivered by a GA Vice President) Excellencies, Ladies and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nMessage on the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)\r\n\r\n7 April 2023\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history.
