One of the former centres of slave trade.<\/p>\n It was a shocking experience to enter the prison cells and tunnels where human beings were imprisoned, turned into slaves, then exported to the slave markets of the New World.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t think I will ever forget the feeling of horror felt there.<\/p>\n While the transatlantic slave trade is over, the foundations on which it stood have not slave trade, and to express our gratitude to all those who had the bravery to stand up to it.<\/i><\/p>\n It fosters a space for us to look towards our future.)<\/i><\/p>\n George Orwell said that \u201cthe most effective way to destroy a people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history\u201d.<\/p>\n For this reason, this year\u2019s theme: \u201cFighting slavery\u2019s legacy of racism through transformative education\u201d, is more than timely.\u00a0<\/p>\n As a global community, we have a duty of remembrance.<\/p>\n History, the facts of which should not be distorted, must serve as a lesson for all of us.<\/p>\n To honor the victims, and to promote a culture of respect for their descendants.<\/p>\n But for this duty of memory to truly be put in practice, we must reshape our education systems and curricula.<\/p>\n We have to do this to foster a genuine sense of justice for the victims, and to alleviate racial tensions that divide many of our societies.\u00a0<\/p>\n We should all learn the story of Olaudah Equiano\u2019s survival in the Middle Passage.<\/p>\n The significance of the 1791 uprising on the island of Saint Domingue \u2013 Haiti.<\/p>\n Zumbi dos Palmares\u2019 solidarity towards his enslaved comrades.<\/p>\n The tale of the Garifunas and the origins of Palenqueros and Papiamento.<\/p>\n And we should also learn about the\u00a0selfless<\/span>\u00a0struggle of the great abolitionists from Frederic Douglass to Harriet Beecher Stowe and Harriet Tubman.<\/p>\n Good people who were brave enough to stand up against the dominant ideologies of their times.<\/p>\n This is also our shared memory.<\/p>\n Through education, we can confute any revisionism with undisputable facts.<\/p>\n Through education, we can raise awareness of the dangers caused by\u00a0misconceptions of\u00a0<\/span>supremacy \u2013 whether past or present.<\/p>\n Through education, we can ensure that no one will ever experience the hell lived by the 15 million we commemorate today.<\/p>\n And so, through education, the painful stories of racism can be transformed into a future of peace. \u00a0<\/p>\n A future that is rooted in justice, Ireland for the invitation.\r\n\r\nFergal, happy St. Patrick\u2019s Day to you!\r\n\r\nDear Alya and Fergal, I am sincerely grateful to you for your work leading this process, and in particular the preparation of the elements paper circulated to MS on 28 February.\r\n\r\nThis paper is a good basis to start the discussion.\r\n\r\nI fully agree with the co-facilitators\u2019 call for the political declaration to be a consensual, concise, ambitious, action-oriented and transformative document.\r\n\r\nI have been particularly pleased by their emphasis on the need to have an ambitious and transformative outcome at the Summit.\r\n\r\nI am sure that, if we want to have such an outcome, we need transformative elements. We have to tell the world why and how the second half of the SDG implementation period will be more impactful and our pledges more credible.\r\n\r\nWe may think of what has been missing from the current implementation and reporting. If you wish, where are the Gamechangers \u2013 that will make our commitments more credible.\r\n\r\nI have in mind key building blocks such as \u201cBeyond GDP\u201d or the creation of the scientific evaluation system of the SDGs\u2019 implementation.\r\n\r\n\u201cBeyond GDP\u201d to measure the real transformation for which we had no real tool until now and Scientific Validation System\u00a0to make the data comparable and validate the aggregated impacts.\r\n\r\nI am very much encouraged by the positive feedback from Member States and various stakeholders on these proposals.\r\n\r\nLikewise, it will be useful and helpful to take into consideration the discussions and commitments that emanated or will, hopefully, emanate from several processes, such as the Transforming Education Summit, COP27, COP 15, the LDC5 Conference, the UN Water Conference, the Sendai Framework Mid-Term Review, the HLPF, and FfD.\r\n\r\nI am sure that the UN Water Conference as well as other upcoming meetings and ongoing processes will result in game-changers that can also find their place in the political declaration of the SDG Summit.\r\n\r\nThe SDG Summit will constitute the mid-point review of the implementation of the 17 Goals.\r\n\r\nMy vision for the SDG Summit is one of a meeting that serves to produce a quality change in our efforts to accelerate implementation at all levels.\r\n\r\nA quantum leap, if you wish.\r\n\r\nAn outcome to turbocharge implementation.\r\n\r\nFor that to happen, we need to go beyond repeating well-known affirmations, set out bold steps and demonstrate leadership at this critical time.\r\n\r\nThe outcome will provide guidance to many international platforms. organisations, including development, banks.\r\n\r\nLadies and gentlemen,\r\n\r\nThe stakes are huge.
