Dear Executive Directors,<\/p>\n

Dear Colleagues,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A very good afternoon to you all.<\/p>\n

It is good to see so many people in the same room who hold the keys to transformation in our societies.<\/p>\n

And l am sure that there will be no real transformation, unless we release the full potential of the half of humanity: women and girls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is very timely that you share your perspectives on how we can advance gender equality in the workplace during this digital era.<\/p>\n

Women now lead only 10% of Fortune 500 companies \u2013 this is still a far cry from equality.<\/p>\n

Data would also tell us that, with today\u2019s speed, it may take 257 years to close the gender pay gap.<\/p>\n

This is a ringing alarm that we have a long way to go.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s economic empowerment is a right, not a privilege.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s common sense, not charity.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also good business.<\/p>\n

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and women were forced to leave the workforce at a much higher rate than men, it cost women $800 billion in income.<\/p>\n

Studies also show that the equal participation of women and men in the economy could add $28 trillion to global GDP.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dear Friends,<\/p>\n

Gender equality cuts across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n

And with the midpoint of fulfilling our 2030 Agenda fast approaching, we simply cannot afford to postpone action any longer.<\/p>\n

To drive transformational change in sustainable development \u2013 we must embrace technology.<\/p>\n

Yet within the tech sector itself, women are often \u201cgender gapped\u201d \u2013 underhired, underrepresented and underpaid.<\/p>\n

Only when women and girls have equal access to the digital sphere, can technology truly be a vessel for driving transformative change.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Alaina Percival, CEO of Women Who Code, once said: \u201cI realized that if I was willing to step up and be in the spotlight, I\u2019d be able to make everyone else around me much more powerful as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is about women supporting each other and showing to girls that they can follow the pathways of their choice.<\/p>\n

More than 6,000 corporate leaders \u2013 perhaps everyone in this room \u2013 already support the Women\u2019s Empowerment Principles developed by UN-Women and the Global Compact.<\/p>\n

But how are your companies putting these principles into action?<\/p>\n

I ask the same of any of you who are leading on gender equality as members of the Champions of Change Coalition.<\/p>\n

How to enhance the digital literacy of women and girls?<\/p>\n

How to tackle the stereotypes preventing them from pursuing STEM careers?<\/p>\n

And how to support women\u2019s leadership in the private sector?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is up to us, in this room, CEOs and decision-makers, to foster an environment for women and girls where they can unlock their true potential.<\/p>\n

But, enough of me preaching to the choir.<\/p>\n

Today, my role is to listen and learn from you all.<\/p>\n

I look forward to your contributions and to having a productive exchange with you today.<\/p>\n
