29 July 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n Distinguished Delegates,<\/p>\n Future Leaders of the World,<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Thank you all for being here today and for demonstrating so much enthusiasm towards deepening your knowledge of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the Italian Diplomatic Academy, the Model United Nations, and the World Council for Youth and Diplomacy, for organizing this conference.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Dear friends,<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n The UN was founded to prevent the scourge of war and to promote peace, with the core purpose of passing this torch on from generation to generation.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n There are today 1.8 billion young people around the globe \u2013 the largest youth population in human history.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n These youths are our future, but they are, first and foremost, our present.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n It is therefore paramount to the UN\u2019s mission that we ensure their meaningful engagement in our multilateral system, by prioritizing their full participation and recognizing their integral role in decision-making.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Commitment to engage meaningfully with young people and to bring youth voices, experiences and ideas to global debates, building the open exchanges and collaboration that we need for positive change today has been clearly brought out by the UN Secretary General in his \u201cOur Common Agenda\u201d report.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Friends,<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n By involving young women and men in global multilateralism, I believe we can lay the foundations for a more inclusive and sustainable future. A future that will enable us to bridge the digital divide, to achieve the SDGs, and to overcome climate change.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n As I have emphasized throughout my term as President, by virtue of their age, energy, activism, and learning abilities, young people are key agents of change.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Young people have brought to light the value of global solidarity and mobilization across borders to drive change for more inclusive and sustainable societies.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n They have consistently demonstrated their capacity to advocate for themselves and their communities, and to thereby address many of the challenges we face.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n They are\u00a0playing an increasingly important role in designing, co-producing knowledge, providing solutions and raising awareness for climate action.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n For this reason, it is of the utmost importance that we put young people front and center, and ensure they feel ownership over the multilateral system.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n This includes the United Nations, which is at the heart of\u00a0 international cooperation.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n My dear friends,<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n I am very proud to have launched and successfully implemented the Fellowship of HOPE. Through this programme, eight young diplomats from underrepresented countries have joined my office, giving them the opportunity to become better acquainted with the work of the UN, a program consonant with the Model UN\u2019s work.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I am also pleased to have organized the High-level Debate on \u201cEnhancing youth mainstreaming in crime prevention policies\u201d which addressed the importance of engaging young people proactively to prevent crime.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Most recently, I have launched the \u201cVoices of Youth – Time Capsule\u201d, a novel occasion to center youth voices in our work and showcase their hopes and aspirations for their future.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n From climate change to pandemics, the world our youth are inheriting suffers from many interlocking challenges which disproportionately affect those most vulnerable.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n From your communities all the way up to the United Nations, young people must be involved in the decisions that will shape their destinies and futures.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Spotlighting youth perspectives on global issues and identifying new ways of engaging young people in decision-making requires not only tangible commitments by governments but a complete reorientation of the functioning of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n We must amplify voices that are all too often marginalized.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n This is why your participation in this conference is so important.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Over the next few days, you will be provided with the skills necessary to deliver the substantive change this world so desperately needs.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I have no doubt that you are up to the challenge.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n We believe in you and are counting on you.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n I thank you again and I wish you nothing but success.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" UN General Assembly, New York<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":362,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":" Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p> I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p> Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p> A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the UN and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p> In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p> Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p> I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p> I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p> Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p> And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p> Our work continues.<\/p> We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p> And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p> Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p> With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p> There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p> As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p> As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p> As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> We have made much progress within a short while.
