The organization has played a key role in creating dozens of institutions and agreements that have advanced understanding of global challenges and propelled international action.<\/p>\n<p>These include game-changers such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a01987 Montreal Protocol, which led to a 98 percent drop in controlled ozone depleting gases;<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which since 1988 the leading global body on climate science;<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a01992 Earth Summit, and its associated global treaties on climate and biodiversity;<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a02005 Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the first ever survey of the health of the world\u2019s biological resources.<\/li>\n<li>The phasing out of leaded fuel last July, after a relentless 19-year campaign; and<\/li>\n<li>Helping prevent many endangered species from going extinct\u00a0and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>UNEP has helped to lay the foundations for a scientific consensus on environmental decline, and it should be proud of the body of law that has been enacted globally.<\/p>\n<p>UNEP\u2019s convening power and rigorous scientific research has provided a platform for countries to engage, act boldly and advance the global environmental agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, I also acknowledge and applaud the Government of Kenya for its role in hosting the Secretariat of UNEP for the past 50 years, and for supporting its many initiatives in environmental conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Dear friends,<\/p>\n<p>Today, as we commemorate UNEP\u2019s efforts and achievements, we must reflect on whether we, as a global community, are doing enough to support those efforts and to meet our obligations to the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Now, at this critical time, as the world recovers from a pandemic and is confronted with the realities of war, climate change, and environmental degradation, we must step up to the task. We must redouble our commitments and stay on track to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We must take action to preserve our planet, its environments, and our collective well-being. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During this High-Level Meeting, I look forward to Member States\u2019 adoption of the political declaration on strengthening international environmental law and environmental governance. And I very much look forward to the outcome that will derive from the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>My friends,<\/p>\n<p>I come from the Maldives, a small island state, heavily reliant on our ecosystems for our sustenance and economy. I know the human costs that will accompany environmental degradation and climate change. \u00a0That is why I made \u2018protecting the planet\u2019 one of the key priorities of my Presidency of Hope, and why I will continue to support environmental champions, such as UNEP, in their important work.<\/p>\n<p>In three months, we will mark 50 years since the historic Conference held in Stockholm, in 1972, which led to the creation of UNEP. The\u00a0Stockholm Declaration\u00a0provided the first agreed global set of principles for future work in the field of the human environment. It was a considerable contribution to the development of international environmental law. Its legacy continues.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing this, I will convene a preparatory meeting for this International Meeting in three weeks, in New York. Stockholm will serve as a space for reflection on the dependencies between humanity and the environment, and on our responsibility for the well-being of both.<\/p>\n<p>Both commemorations provide opportunities to build lasting coalitions for the environment, and will foster stronger partnerships, for, and with, future generations.<\/p>\n<p>This is something I truly champion: to build the future we want, we need to listen to the voices of future generations.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of these important commemorations and given that the 76<sup>th<\/sup> Session of the UN General Assembly coincides with High-Level Meetings on biodiversity, desertification, the ocean, energy, and climate &#8211; I will convene a High-Level Thematic Debate in July, entitled a \u2018Moment for Nature\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There, we will reflect on solutions to common bottlenecks across the environmental agenda, to accelerate progress on all fronts.<\/p>\n<p>I will also convene a High-Level Meeting in May, focused \u201con the sustainable and resilient recovery of the tourism sector\u201d, where I will emphasize the need for the world to transition to blue and green economic practices.<\/p>\n<p>I believe we can achieve prosperity for all without compromising our natural blessings, and while taking action to protect climate vulnerable communities residing in Small Island Developing States.<\/p>\n<p>Dear colleagues,<\/p>\n<p>Rest assured that throughout the session and going forward, I will always support efforts to preserve the health of our planet.<\/p>\n<p>Though the challenges are many, and the pandemic has made our task of meeting those challenges ever more difficult, I believe that through multilateralism and concerted effort, we will prevail.<\/p>\n<p>With that conviction, let us act now to preserve the earth and its rich environmental heritage for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>I thank you.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme\/ Nairobi, Kenya (Participated virtually)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":353,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"<p>Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p><p>I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p><p>Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p><p>A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75<sup>th<\/sup> and 76<sup>th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the UN and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76<sup>th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p><p>In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28<sup>th<\/sup> last year.<\/p><p>Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p><p>I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p><p>I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p><p>Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p><p>And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the <em>Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p><p>Our work continues.<\/p><p>We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p><p>And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p><p>Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p><p>With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p><p>There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p><p>As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p><p>As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p><p>As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p><p>I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal
