Starting in Guatemala.

 

The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is in Ciudad de Guatemala today.

 

This is the first visit of a President of the General Assembly to Guatemala.

 

He is due to meet with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei this afternoon.

 

This morning, President Shahid met with Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro.

 

He praised Guatemala’s commitment to multilateralism and peacekeeping.

 

They also discussed migration, specifically the International Migration Review Forum. The SDGs, climate change and gender equality.

 

The President also met with Radolfo Sabonge, the Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States. In addition, some of the topics discussed there was the high-level tourism event held in May, and the High-level Moment for Nature that twill take place on Tuesday.

 

President Shahid also visited the Congress and the Supreme Court, meeting with senior officials there – including Ms. Shirley Rivera, who is the president of the Congress, and with Ms. Silvia Valdes, who is the President of the Supreme Court of Justice.

 

This afternoon, President Shahid has a number of bilaterals, including with the Minister of Labor, Mr. Rafael Rodriguez.

 

He will also meet with the UN Resident Coordinator José Miguel Barreto and the UN Country Team.

 

The working visit will focus on sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, sustainable development and peacekeeping.
