The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. Augusto Santos Silva, President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, on the sidelines of the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon.
The President of the General Assembly briefed President Santos Silva on his recent meetings both with President Marcelo Rebelo and Prime Minister António Costa as well as expressed his utmost gratitude to the Portuguese Government for its support ahead of the Ocean Conference.
President Santos Silva underscored that it was an honor for Portugal to host the Ocean Conference.
Both President’s also welcomed the agreement on the political declaration of the Ocean Conference as much-needed evidence that Member States were able to come together with one voice on a topic of worldwide importance.
Noting his previous experience as a Member of Parliament in the Maldives for 25 years, President Shahid noted the critical nature of the relationship between national parliaments and the UN and pledged to keep the channels open and the dialogue fluid. President Santos Silva also welcomed the adoption of the GA resolution on the interaction between the UN, national parliaments and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on 21 June 2022.
The meeting took place at the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic in Lisbon.
