ROAD SAFETY

Turning to road safety.

The High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on Improving Global Road Safety at the UN Headquarters will start on Thursday, 30 June. This is a two-day high-level meeting.

There will be an opening session on Thursday at 10AM in the General Assembly Hall. The speakers will be:

  • President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid
  • Secretary-General António Guterres
  • WHO Director-General Representative Stewart Simonson
  • Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt

After the opening session, the General Assembly is expected to adopt a Political Declaration.

Following the adoption, there will be a press stakeout in the General Assembly East Foyer at around 11:30 AM. We expect President Shahid, Mr. Simonson, representing WHO, and Special Envoy Jean Todt.

The rest of Thursday’s meeting will be in a plenary session format.

Then on Friday, there will be three multi-stakeholder panels. The plenary will wrap up and then a closing segment.

At 11AM on Friday, there will be a press conference in this room. The focus will be on the UN Road Safety Fund. The speakers will be PGA Shahid, UNECE Executive Secretary Olga Algayerova and Special Envoy Jean Todt.

In addition to the high-level meeting, there are a number of related events.

You have a joint media advisory in your inboxes with the details, and with the contact information for my colleagues at WHO, the Special Envoy’s office, and the UN Road Safety Fund.

IF ASKED ON MIGRANTS

This is very sad. We understand that an additional 16 people – including four children – have been taken to the hospitals. This latest incident is just one of many around the world. The first International Migration Review Forum was just held in May under the auspices of the General Assembly. What came out clearly from the IMRF was that that there is agreement that the international community must act now to support migrants.
