Readout of the meeting between the President of the General Assembly and the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross

The President of the 76^th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid met with Mr. Peter Maurer, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross. 

President Shahid highlighted the importance of the humanitarian mission of ICRC in protecting the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance as well as ICRC’s role and response during the COVID-19 pandemic and its efforts across the world to ensure unconditional access to vaccines. 

The President of the ICRC briefed the PGA on the various activities carried out by ICRC and congratulated President Shahid on the work done so far during the seventy-sixth session.

Both sides exchanged views on the cooperation between the United Nations and ICRC, vaccine equity, PGA’s upcoming events and the importance of including young people in multilateralism, including PGA’s Fellowship for HOPE. 

The meeting took place in the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva.
