WEEK AHEAD

On Monday, 6 June…

Starting at 10AM ET in the GA Hall, there will be a high-level meeting on the theme “Enhancing youth mainstreaming in crime prevention policies“as mandated by the General Assembly resolution 76/187 from last December. This debate will be held in cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. The end result will be a summary of discussion, which will be shared with the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and with all Member States.

I wanted to highlight that in addition to President Shahid, the opening segment will include the Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and the Executive Director of UNODC Ghada Fathi Waly. You will also hear from World Scouting Youth Representative, Junbert Pabon – who is from the Philippines and given that this is an event focused on youth, I will note that he is 21.

In the afternoon, there will be a panel discussion and let me highlight two participants who might be of interest:  The Minister of Youth from the Dominican Republic, Rafael J. Féliz García. In his early 30s, he is the youngest Minister in the Government there. And Claudia Plakolm, who is 27, and is the State Secretary for Youth Affairs of Austria

In the morning session, we will have the election for the President and the Vice-Presidents of the 77th session of the General Assembly.

In the afternoon on Tuesday, the GA will consider the IMRF Progress Declaration. You will recall that the International Migration Review Forum approved by consensus the Progress Declaration on 20 May. On Tuesday, it will go before the General Assembly plenary.

At 10AM ET, the General Assembly will convene a plenary meeting under the agenda item “Strengthening of the United Nations system.” This is the debate following the vetoes cast in the Security Council on 26 May under the agenda item “Non-proliferation/Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea.”

In the afternoon on Wednesday, the General Assembly will hold a debate related to the protracted conflicts in GUAM – Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
