ANGOLA

The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is in Angola for an official visit at the invitation of the Government.

The President is there to highlight the priorities of his Presidency of Hope. He is also there to urge the international community to act for nature.

The President’s visit to Angola follows his address at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The President wrapped up his trip in Adidjan yesterday with a visit to the Lycee Sainte-Marie de Cocody. The site includes a poultry farm managed by students, and there is also a forest area where generations of students have planted trees and plants. The President said that he appreciates the passion, the creativity, the excellence shown by the students.He was accompanied by the Minister of National Education and Literacy, Mariatou Koné,

On the sidelines of the visit, President Shahid met with the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani. They discussed the global recovery from COVID, the global markets crisis resulting from Ukraine, desertification and the situation in the Sahel. And as with all such bilaterals, there is a readout.

 

CUBA EMBARGO

In New York…

The General Assembly this morning agreed to defer consideration of the item entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. The General Assembly decided to also defer the report of the Secretary- General, and to include the item in the provisional agenda of its seventy-seventh session. This decision was made by consensus.

Underway today in the Trusteeship, the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly is holding a thematic debate on working methods.

 

HOPE FELLOWS

And a quick update about the HOPE Fellows.

Today, the eight Fellows discussed European Parliament policies with Ms. Eva Kaili, a Vice-President of the European Parliament.

They also observed a hearing of the Committee of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety in the Parliament.

The visit was organized by the European Union amid its European Year of Youth.

 

QUESTIONS

 The Spokesperson was asked about the decision to defer the vote on Cuba. The Spokesperson confirmed by email that the request was made by the Permanent Mission of Cuba.
