Readout of the meeting between President of General Assembly and Executive Secretary of (UNCCD), H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw

The President of the 76^th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, the Executive Secretary of (UNCCD).

The President of the General Assembly thanked H.E. Ibrahim Thiaw for his invitation and the support provided by his office in New York. He also acknowledged UNCCDs efforts and commitment to combat desertification and meeting the 2030 promise. 

H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw thanked the President for participating in the 15^th session of the UN Convention to Combat desertification UNCCD-COP15. He also expressed his support for the Presidency of Hope and reaffirmed UNCCD office support for the OPGA to advance sustainable development, particularly SDG 15.3 concerning the fight against desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD).  He also highlighted UNCCD’s engagement with the United Nations systems to ensure the inclusion of women and youth and reiterated its commitment to multilateralism. 

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics such as multilateralism, climate change, youth, and gender. 

The meeting took place in Sofitel, Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan.
