The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with the Co-Chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly, H.E. Ms. Egriselda González López, Permanent Representative of El Salvador, and H.E. Mr. Mitch Fifield, Permanent Representative of Australia.

The Co-Chairs briefed President Shahid on the work of the AHWG during the 76th session, highlighting both meetings held thus far – the General Debate and the Thematic Debate on the role and authority of the GA – and their efforts to promote interactive discussions among Member States. The Co-Chairs pledged to continue urging delegations to build on existing mandates, such as the need to reduce the number of side events during the High-Level Week.

The President thanked the Co-Chairs for their outstanding work in pushing the revitalization process forward and commented on the steps taken by his Office to implement current mandates. For example, with reference to the need to promote gender parity for invited speakers and panelists, President Shahid noted that women accounted for approximately 58% of all panellists in the OCA thematic consultations. Lastly, the President welcomed the holding of the Thematic Debate on working methods on 11 May and ensured the Co-Chairs of the full support of his team for the remainder of the session.

The meeting took place in Conference Room 9 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
