SYRIA

Starting with the General Assembly…

This morning, Member States met in an informal meeting of the plenary to hear an interim oral update on the situation of human rights in Syria.

High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet spoke virtually.

Overseeing today’s meeting is Ambassador Pedro Comissário Afonso, Permanent Representative of Mozambique and a Vice-President of the General Assembly.

 

SPORT

The GA is now on a break. It will reconvene at 12:45PM for a plenary meeting to take action on a draft resolution under agenda item 12. Sport for development and peace: building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal.

The resolution is entitled: 2022 International Federation of Association Football World Cup in Qatar.

 

MIGRATION

Turning to Migration…

Today wraps up the second round of consultations on the outcome document from the International Migration Review Forum. This is the so-called Progress Declaration.

Ambassador Rabab Fatima, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh and Ambassador Olivier Maes, the Permanent Representative of Luxembourg, are the co-facilitators of the International Migration Review Forum.

The Forum will be held at the UN General Assembly starting on 17 May. It will be preceded by a one-day informal interactive multi-stakeholder hearing on 16 May.

 

NEXT WEEK

And coming up next week…

On Tuesday, there will be a meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the work of the General Assembly.

That same day, there will also be preparations for the high-level meeting on improving road safety. There will be informal consultations on the priorities for the draft political declaration of the high-level meeting, which will take place this summer, on 30 June and 1 July.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid, will take part in the 7th Our Ocean Conference in Palau. The Conference is co-hosted by Palau and the United States. This is the first time that a small island developing state is hosting the Our Ocean Conference.

 

UNITAR

And today is Friday, so the HOPE Fellows are in their weekly training with the UN Institute for Training and Research or UNITAR.

Today’s topic is international law and the sixth committee.
