Starting with the General Assembly Hall.
Underway is the preparatory meeting entitled “Stockholm+50: a healthy plant for the prosperity for all – our responsibility, our opportunity.”
In his opening remarks, the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, spoke about the need to be united and act quickly to stem the impact of climate change.
He said “there is hope. We have the knowledge and we have the capacity. All that remains is summoning the political will to translate that into action.”
Those remarks were delivered by Ambassador Osama Mahmoud Abdel Khalek Mahmoud, the Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations, and one of the General Assembly Vice-Presidents.
The opening segment also included remarks from Ms. Annika Strandhall, Sweden’s Minister for Climate and the Environment. And Mr. Keriako Tobiko, from Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
As well as Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
The Stockholm+50 international conference will be held on 2nd and 3rd June.
President Abdulla Shahid will deliver today’s closing remarks in-person.
SIDS MULTIDIMENSIONAL VULNERABILITY INDEX
The first meeting of the high-level panel of experts on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index was held today.
During the meeting, the Office of the President of the General Assembly, briefed the panel on the terms of reference of its work and the expectations of the Member States.
You will recall that President Abdulla Shahid met with the co-chairs on 18 March.
The co-chairs are Mr. Gaston Browne, the Prime Minster of Antigua and Barbuda; and Ms. Erna Solberg, the Prime Minister of Norway.
The Panel will keep Member States regularly briefed on the work and ensure that all partners in the process are consulted.
Over the weekend, President Shahid was the keynote speaker in the opening of the 20th Doha Forum.
He spoke under the title of “Transforming for a New Era” focusing on four main areas: Geopolitical Alliances and International Relations; Financial System and Economic Development; Defense, Cyber and Food Security; Climate Change and Sustainability.
While in Doha, President Abdulla Shahid met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar.
He also met with Qatari Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
All costs for the visit were generously funded by the Government of the State of Qatar.
