New York, 2 February – The President of the UN General Assembly, H.E Abdulla Shahid, will undertake an official visit to China from 3-5 February to attend the XXIV Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

On 4 February, President Shahid will participate in the Olympic torch relay. He will receive the torch from the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach.

The President will then take part in the 2022 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Beijing National Stadium.  

On 5 February, Mr. Shahid will meet with IOC President Bach, followed by a press stakeout. He will then watch events at the Olympic Games.

In January, Mr. Shahid issued a Solemn Appeal in the General Assembly Hall, calling for an Olympic Truce to be respected from 27 January to 20 March 2022. 

As part of the Solemn Appeal, Mr. Shahid recognized the historic and significant role that sport plays in peace and solidarity: “I welcome the leadership of Olympic and Paralympic athletes in promoting peace and human understanding through sport and the Olympic ideal, and the commitment made by various States Members of the United Nations to developing national and international programmes that promote peace and conflict resolution and the Olympic and Paralympic values through sport, and through culture, education and sustainable development.”

Mr. Shahid will be accompanied to Beijing by his Advisor on Sustainable Development and his Executive Assistant.

Mr. Shahid’s travel costs will be covered by the IOC.
