The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, had a coordination meeting with H.E. Ambassador Mona Juul, Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations and the President of the Security Council for the month of January.

Ambassador Juul briefed the President on the programme of work of the Security Council during Norway’s ongoing Council Presidency in January, highlighting their focus on including civil society and female briefers in the open debates and ensuring that the Council is open to the UN membership for delivering statements, while putting adequate COVID-19 security measures in place.

PGA commended the Security Council’s Open Debate on Women Peace and Security and underlined his priority of integrating the gender dimension across UNGA processes during the 76th session. He further expressed hope that his Youth Fellowship Program, which strengthens the capacities of underrepresented countries would be continued by future PGAs. Currently, 8 Fellows (5 female and 3 male) from underrepresented countries are participating in the program.

Both sides agreed on the importance of in-person diplomacy and facilitating in-person participation of Member States in the meetings of the Security Council and the General Assembly and exchanged views on other issues such as Women, Peace and Security, Our Common Agenda, Civil Society engagement, and climate change and security.

They further discussed priorities of the PGA, including the High-Level Meeting on COVID-19 vaccine equity on 25 February. Ambassador Juul also talked about the importance of strengthening the cooperation and coordination of the principal UN organs and commended PGA’s joint briefing with President of the ECOSOC.

The meeting took place at the President’s Office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on 20 January 2022.
