PRIORITIES SPEECH PREVIEW

President Abdulla Shahid will brief the General Assembly tomorrow on his priorities for the resumed part of the 76th session. This will be the first General Assembly meeting of the year 2022.

The President’s priorities will remain consistent with the five “Rays of Hope” – recovering from COVID, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, respecting rights of all and revitalizing the United Nations.

In addition, in his speech tomorrow, President Shahid will speak about hope and cynicism. As you know, his presidency has been built around the theme of hope.

That’s tomorrow at 10AM in the General Assembly Hall.

And a reminder that on Thursday morning, the General Assembly will holds it 55th plenary meeting. President Shahid will issue his solemn appeal in connection with the Beijing 2022 Olympics during the meeting.

On Thursday afternoon, he and the ECOSOC President will hold their joint briefing in the General Assembly Hall.

The Spokesperson was asked whether President Shahid plans to take action in the General Assembly on the situation of women in Afghanistan. The Spokesperson answered that it is up to Member States to take action in the General Assembly. In addition, there is an annual meeting and a resolution in the General Assembly on the issue of Afghanistan.

The Spokesperson was asked about how votes would be conducted in Thursday’s General Assembly. She responded off-camera that as of now, no Member State has called for a vote.
