The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, and representatives of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in China, during his visit to China. The UNCT representatives consisted of representatives from more than 20 UN funds, programs, and specialized agencies in China.

 

The UNCT warmly welcomed the President’s visit to China. Mr. Chatterjee briefed the PGA about the cooperation between UNCT and the Chinese government, as well as the ongoing cooperation in implementing the Global Development Initiative launched by China. UNCT Results Groups and Thematic Groups briefed him about their recent work in priority areas including poverty reduction and equitable development, improved and sustainable environment and enhanced global engagement.

 

The President extended his appreciation to the United Nations country team working on the ground. He briefed the UNCT about his vision, priorities and work. The President stressed that his Presidency will prioritise recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic with vaccine equity as a focus. He commended the fruitful cooperation between UNCT and the Chinese government, and noted the importance of providing coherent and coordinated responses on the ground for countries – one that translates into better support for Governments to implement the SDGs.
