The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with Mr. Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, during his visit to China. 

 

H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi pledged the continued and firm support of China to the President’s efforts in safeguarding the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. Mr. Yang stressed that safeguarding and practicing multilateralism, and building a community of share future for all mankind are the only way out for the complex and interlinked challenges of today. He assured that China will continue to honour the noble ideal of the United Nations and work together with all countries to make greater contributions to peace and development of the world. 

 

The President appreciated China’s support to the United Nations and his Presidency, and briefed him on the five rays of Hope and the priorities including recovery from the pandemic, rebuilding sustainably, responding to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of all and revitalization of the United Nations. He noted that small States highly value international law and basic principles which are the guarantee of their sovereignty and development. He assured of his committed to facilitating the reforms of the United Nations, including the Security Council. He also stressed that the process of Security Council Reform is one of the most important and sensitive negotiations currently taking place at the UN, and Member States need to continue discussions to find common ground.

 

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, such as sustainable development, climate change, recovery from the pandemic.
