Today, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, had a coordination meeting with H.E. Ambassador Juan Ramón de La Fuente Ramírez, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations and the President of the Security Council for the month of November.

Ambassador de La Fuente Ramírez briefed the President on the programme of work of the Security Council during Mexico`s Presidency in November, highlighting its signature events, namely open debate on exclusion, inequality and conflicts, open debate on peace and security through preventive diplomacy, and open debate on small arms.

President Shahid commended Mexico for advancing the issues of gender equality, preventive diplomacy and small arms during its presidency and looked forward to participating in the open debate on peace and security through preventive diplomacy.

Both sides agreed to work closely on the upcoming elections of the judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to be held simultaneously in the General Assembly and the Security Council. They shared the view on the need to have greater in-person participation of Member States in the meetings of the Security Council. They also discussed priorities of the PGA, including ensuring COVID-19 vaccine equity.

President Shahid wished Ambassador de La Fuente Ramírez a successful presidency and said he is looking forward to closer coordination between the General Assembly and the Security Council in the month of November.
