Remarks by H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly

26 March 2021

I have listened carefully to your statements this morning and so have our stakeholders out there in the wider world. I applaud the 181 countries that have come forward with this joint political declaration. I commend them for their leadership and their vision.

From the earliest days of this Presidency, I have stressed that the world has both a moral and practical obligation to provide vaccines for all. This point, and the concrete details on how to achieve it, were underscored at the special session on COVID-19, in December.

Today, through your declaration, you have recommitted to these values.

Amongst the many points are commitments:

–        to treat COVID-19 vaccination as a global public good by ensuring affordable, equitable and fair access to vaccines for all;

–        to include financial contributions to the ACT Accelerator and to COVAX in recovery plans;

–        to forge robust partnerships to increase production, distribution and access to COVID-19 vaccines;

–        to tackle misinformation and address vaccine hesitancy;

–        and to strengthen vaccine preparedness, including ensuring efficient supply chains and logistics, to overcome challenges related to vaccine storage, distribution, and management.

Colleagues, these are just some of the actions outlined. Taken together, the entirety of the declaration demonstrates bold and principled support to solidarity, and to a truly multilateral approach to vaccine equity.

I implore you to take up this call to action and implement these commitments to see vaccines for all become a reality.
