The multilateral system allows Member States to coordinate effectively and address challenges that they cannot face on their own — including threats related to nuclear proliferation, terrorism, health, international trade, climate change and humanitarian disasters. The pandemic has clearly demonstrated the benefits of international cooperation, from meeting immediate humanitarian needs, to vaccine development and distribution. The multilateral system is not only an essential tool to tackle issues as they arise, but also to prepare for future global shocks.
