The World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), held in Istanbul in 2016, mobilized global support for the Agenda for Humanity. As conflicts and natural disasters keep driving humanitarian needs, that support needs to continue. The General Assembly can play a vital role aimed at strengthening the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance, with particular attention to the most vulnerable. In a world of growing inequalities, an emphasis on humanitarian action is crucial. In our efforts for addressing the humanitarian needs, reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience, people in need or under oppression should feel that their concerns are being considered in the United Nations’ chief deliberative, policymaking and representative organ. Meanwhile, the Presidency will highlight the importance of impartial and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and full respect for international humanitarian law in conflicts and crises. It will also recognise that the dedication of UN personnel is a driving force behind the UN’s successes in this area.
