Parliamentarian\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Hearing.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nToday at\u00a0<\/span>5:15<\/span>\u00a0in the Trusteeship Council, the President of the General Assembly will speak at the closing of the\u00a0<\/span>2-day<\/span>\u00a0Annual Parliamentary Hearing<\/span>\u00a0under the theme: Education as a key to peace and sustainable\u00a0<\/span>development<\/span>. In his opening remarks yesterday, Mr.\u00a0<\/span>Tijjani<\/span>\u00a0Muhammad-<\/span>Bande<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>thanked\u00a0<\/span>the Inter-Parliamentary Union for the continuous work providing policy guidance, best practices, needs assessments, and direct assistance to national parliaments with implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe PGA added that to<\/span>\u00a0provide youth with the best possible start in life we must implement SDG 4<\/span>: Quality Education<\/span>, and to do so we must adequately finance our efforts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe PGA said that p<\/span>arliaments have a major role to play in scaling up action in this vital area<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>urge<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>\u00a0to ensure that adequate financial resources are allocated to education,\u00a0<\/span>girls\u2019 education and technical and vocational training throughout\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0national budgetary processes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nMeeting<\/span><\/b>s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis morning the PGA met with\u00a0<\/span>Ambassador\u00a0<\/span>Zhang Jun,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Permanent Representative of China and President of Security Council<\/span>\u00a0for the month of\u00a0<\/span>March<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAmbassador Zhang\u00a0<\/span>briefed the PGA on the efforts of the Chinese Government to contain the spread of the coronavirus which he described as challenging but stable. He thanked the PGA and the international community for their solidarity adding that China continues to work closely with\u00a0<\/span>the World Health Organization (<\/span>WHO<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0and other relevant entities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAmbassador Zhang\u00a0<\/span>also briefed the PGA on China’s\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span>\u00a0of work during its\u00a0<\/span>Security Council\u00a0<\/span>presidency in March<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAlso, around now the PGA is meeting with\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0Ms.\u00a0<\/span>Ghada<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Waly<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0newly appointed<\/span>\u00a0Executive Director<\/span>\u00a0of the United Nations Office\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0<\/span>drugs and crime<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>UNODC<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0who\u00a0<\/span>assumed her position on Feb<\/span>ruary 1st<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThey are expected\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>discuss priorities and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>venues for<\/span>\u00a0collaboration<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSpecial Committee on Peacekeeping Operations<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe PGA spoke yesterday at the\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>pening Session of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0He said that t<\/span>he work of th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Committee is very important<\/span>\u00a0as it has<\/span>\u00a0the responsibility of carrying out the \u201ccomprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nL<\/span>ooking at the weight of this responsibility<\/span>, the PGA expressed concern\u00a0<\/span>that th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Committee closed its 2019 substantive session without reaching consensus.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHe<\/span>\u00a0call<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0on all delegations to work together in line with the structure of the new report, complementing the Secretary-General\u2019s Action for Peacekeeping Initiative which provides a roadmap to advance political solutions to conflict and enhance the political impact of peacekeeping.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHe emphasized the need<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0improve the capacity of peacekeeping<\/span>\u00a0and to\u00a0<\/span>ensure that\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>we do everything in our power to protect those who protect the people we serve.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLater this week<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOn Friday the<\/span>\u00a0PGA<\/span>\u00a0will be participating in several events including\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>2nd Edition of the African Union Challenges Conference: Shaping the African\u00a0<\/span>Emergence<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consultations on the\u00a0<\/span>75<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0anniversary of the UN and\u00a0<\/span>International Mother Language Day<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ custom_padding__hover=”|||” custom_padding=”|||”][et_pb_code admin_label=”BrightCove Video ShortCode” _builder_version=”4.3.2″ vertical_offset_tablet=”0″ horizontal_offset_tablet=”0″ z_index_tablet=”0″]\n\n
