Statement by H.E. Tijjani Muhammad Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly
23 September 2019

I am happy to be here today to discuss a very important topic and to commemorate a set of conventions that are very important when we talk about war. They have contributed much to the international rule of law. In many situations we have seen them protecting people from conflict.
Any form of multilateralism must be based on the rule of law.
It is a head and a wedge against those who think that there is a way to destroy human life and get away with it. All efforts must be put forward to support an organisation like ICRC and other organisations like it. This really acts to remind us all of our commitment and how to further develop international humanitarian law.
We can all fall into situations of conflict and we need the protections offered by the Geneva Conventions. The General Assembly and the UN in general, support this mechanism. I thank everyone for being here today.
Let us recommit to these Conventions which protect and reaffirm the rights of people. Even during war, people have rights and should be protected.
Thank you very much.
