Statement by H.E. Tijjani Muhammad Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

2 September 2020

Your Excellency, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations in New York,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I thank the Permanent Representative of Viet Nam, H.E. Dang Dinh Quy for inviting me to speak at this very important event. I congratulate Viet Nam on the celebration of its 75th anniversary of independence and appreciate the remarkable contribution and collaboration it has had with the United Nations since it joined the organization in 1977.

It’s noteworthy that the government of Viet Nam and the United Nations have worked closely to promote world peace and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs. This is reflected in Viet Nam’s laudable support to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, Viet Nam’s non-permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, and focus on development priorities such as  “investing in people”; “ensuring climate resilience and environmental sustainability”, among others.

I commend Viet Nam for the important role it plays in its region, particularly its leadership of ASEAN this year. ASEAN is crucial in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia and the United Nations Charter recognizes the important roles and activities of regional arrangements, such as ASEAN, in promoting the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Excellencies, distinguished colleagues,

I congratulate the Government of Viet Nam for its alertness and leadership in managing the COVID-19 outbreak. I am also grateful for the coordination with the World Health Organization and other UN agencies in managing the pandemic. I urge that such cooperation continue.

As the pandemic has shown, that no country or region could overcome this global crisis alone and that global solidarity that we are talking about every day is crucially important. Last April, the General Assembly adopted resolution 74/270 on global solidarity to fight the virus. This UN resolution acknowledges that addressing the COVID-19 pandemic requires a global response, solidarity, and unity, and calls for international cooperation to contain, mitigate, and defeat the pandemic.

As with other things, cooperation is critical and we support and we are grateful for the way in which Viet Nam has been such a responsible member of international organizations, including being a member of the UN Security Council currently.

I thank Ambassador Dang Quy for Viet Nam’s active engagement and support throughout the 74th Session of the General Assembly, and I look forward to the continuation of meaningful collaboration between the UN and Viet Nam especially in relation to the General Assembly.

I thank you and congratulations on your 75th Anniversary.
