Statement by H.E. Tijjani Muhammad Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

20 September 2019

It is my honour to be part of this very important ceremony that is related to peace. As stated by the previous speakers, the ultimate purpose of this organization is peace, creating, sustaining it and deepening it.

Peace is the ultimate value and when you reflect, the very best you wish for all and for yourself both in life and in death is peace.

That’s why it’s very important that this year’s theme builds on climate action for peace. The reasons are very clear, the connections between climate change and hunger, migration and conflict are painfully clear. The necessity to deal with them must, therefore, also be very clear to us.

In this task, of dealing with peace and its connection with climate action, we must realize the leadership and effort of youth all over the world, who are trying to say the course of action is clear and should be taken quickly with the involvement of all the young, the not so young, men and women is critical if we are to achieve what we are to achieve today and the future.

I thank you all for your participation in this very important activity.
