PGA SENDS CONDOLENCES TO TUNISIA ON THE PASSING AWAY OF THE COUNTRY\u2019S PRESIDENT, H.E. BEJI CAID ESSEBSI<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly has learned with great sorrow the news of the passing away of President of Tunisia, H.E. Beji Caid Essebsi.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa conveys her deepest condolences to his bereaved family, and to the people of Tunisia. Ms. Espinosa expresses her profound sympathy to Tunisia on this great loss.<\/p>\n

President Beji Caid Essebsi played a key role in promoting the consolidation of political institutions and the rule of law in his country.<\/p>\n

He was also a champion of gender equality.<\/p>\n

The PGA hopes that his legacy will inspire many others and contribute to further strengthen unity and stability in Tunisia.<\/p>\n

GA TO HOST HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The PGA has written to Member States to inform that she will convene a plenary high-level meeting to promote the International Day against Nuclear Tests.<\/p>\n

The event is mandated by a GA resolution (72\/51), which was adopted in December 2017.<\/p>\n

The plenary meeting will take place on 9 September from 10 am. to 1 pm. at the GA Hall.<\/p>\n

The objective is to enhance public awareness and education about the effects of nuclear weapons, nuclear tests and explosions and the need for their cessation towards a nuclear-weapon-free world.<\/p>\n

Member States are invited to deliver remarks on the day.<\/p>\n

MS. ESPINOSA CONGRATULATES H.E MS. MONA JUUL ON HER ELECTION AS THE NEW ECOSOC PRESIDENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa has issued a tweet congratulating the Permanent Representative of Norway, H.E Ms. Mona Juul on her election to the Presidency of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa has commended Ambassador Juul for her tireless work\u00a0in\u00a0advancing\u00a0the 2030 Agenda on sustainable development, her excellent cooperation with the General Assembly and her strong commitment\u00a0tothe work of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The PGA looks forward to continuing to work with H.E. Ms. Mona Juul and to cooperate with her in her new capacity as the new ECOSOC President.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Juul succeeds the Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, H.E Ms. Inga Rhonda King.<\/p>\n
