Good afternoon, everyone!<\/em><\/p>\n

PGA SENDS LETTER TO G-20 MINISTERS ABOUT FRAMEWORK TO TACKLE PLASTIC POLLUTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly has sent a letter to the Ministers of Environment of the G-20 welcoming their decision to create a framework to tackle plastic pollution.<\/p>\n

The G-20 announcement was made last week during the\u00a0Ministerial Meeting on Energy Transition and Global Environment for Sustainable Growth, in Japan.<\/p>\n

In her letter, Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa commended the group of Ministers\u00a0for\u00a0chairing this discussion and finalizing the agreement, which will be implemented voluntarily.<\/p>\n

The PGA also invited the G-20 Member States to voice their support for the\u00a0\u2018St. John\u2019s Declaration on Plastic Pollution\u2019, which was announced at the Play it Out festival on 1 June in Antigua and Barbuda and aims to see CARICOM take steps to address plastic pollution and single-use plastics.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Gaston Browne, will invite all CARICOM countries to become signatories\u00a0to the declaration at an upcoming CARICOM meeting, which is scheduled\u00a0for July.<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s global campaign against plastic pollution is supported by Antigua and Barbuda, Norway, and other partners.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa\u2019s campaign spearheaded an initiative to remove all single-use plastics from the United Nations HQ in New York. This has\u00a0the strong backing of Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, UN staff and the entire Secretariat, for which the PGA is very grateful.<\/p>\n

MS. ESPINOSA TALKS TO 7TH<\/sup>GRADERS ON CLIMATE CHANGE, MIGRATION AND GENDER EQUALITY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa took part in the New York City Junior Ambassadors Program, this\u00a0morning.<\/p>\n

The PGA joined seventh-graders, other UN officials and NYC leaders to discuss global issues such as climate change, migration and gender equality and neighbourhood actions to address them.<\/p>\n

The event at the Queens Museum had more than 500 students in attendance. The NYC Junior Ambassadors Program\u00a0is organised by the Mayor\u2019s\u00a0Office for International Affairs in partnership with the UN.<\/p>\n

Ms. Espinosa joined the 2017-2018 graduating students to hear about classroom projects designed to address pressing global challenges.<\/p>\n

UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Alison Smale, NYC Commissioner for International Affairs Penny Abeywardena, educators, and parents attended the ceremony at the Queens Museum.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

GA HOLDS CONSULTATIONS ON DECLARATION\u00a0FOR\u00a0SAMOA PATHWAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Member States are holding intergovernmental consultations on the draft political declaration of the High-Level Mid-Term Review of the Small Island Developing<\/p>\n

States Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA).<\/p>\n

The meeting, which is the third in a series at expert level, seeks to ensure that the political declaration will be action orientated.<\/p>\n

The PGA appointed the Ambassador of Fiji, H.E, Mr. Satyendra Prasad, and the Permanent Representative of Ireland, H.E, Ms. Geraldine Byrne Nason, as co-facilitators of the consultations.<\/p>\n

The process is expected to be concluded by August.<\/p>\n

This afternoon, the PGA will receive in her office the Ambassador of Kuwait, H.E. Mansour Al-Otaibi, who is the President of the Security Council for the month of June.<\/p>\n
