PRESIDENT ESPINOSA VISITS WOMEN<\/strong>\u2019<\/strong>S FEDERATION IN CHINA<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly met the vice-president of the All-China Women\u2019s Federation, Ms. Huang Xiaowei, earlier today in the country\u2019s capital, Beijing.<\/p>\n

Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa spoke about gender-equality as part of her seven priorities for the current session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

The PGA stressed the importance of empowering women and girls\u00a0and outlined her efforts on three fronts: political leadership, economic empowerment and transforming social norms to accelerate women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n

One of these initiatives was the high-level meeting Women in Power, which the PGA conducted in March, when she invited female Heads of State and Government to New York and launched a\u00a0\u2018Call for Action\u2019.<\/p>\n

Before this meeting, Ms. Espinosa visited the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall\u00a0and met with the Director of\u00a0the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist<\/p>\n

Party\u00a0of China Central Committee, H.E. Mr. Yang Jiechi. On her twitter account, the PGA commended Mr. Jiechi\u2019s commitment to the potential of South-South Cooperation.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Ms. Espinosa held bilateral meetings with the Chinese Prime-Minister, H.E. Mr. Li Keqiang, and the country\u2019s State Councillor and Foreign Minister, H.E.\u00a0Wang Yi.<\/p>\n

The PGA will conclude her official trip to China on Thursday with a visit to the China Disabled Person\u2019s Federation.<\/p>\n

PGA SENDS LETTER OF CONDOLENCE TO FORMER SECRETARY-GENERAL BAN KI-MOON ON THE PASSING OF HIS MOTHER<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly has sent a letter of condolence to the former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, on the passing of his mother, Ms. Shin Hyun-soon.<\/p>\n

She noted that Ms. Shin had just celebrated her 100th birthday and that she must have been extremely proud of all that the former SG had achieved in the \u201cfurtherance of peace and development as such a distinguished servant of the Republic of Korea and of the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PGA said that her thoughts are very much of Mr. Ban and his family at this time of sorrow.<\/p>\n
