I speak on behalf of all Member States in expressing solidarity with the people of Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>And thank you, Ms Mujawayo-Keiner and Reverend Uwineza, for coming here to share your own stories.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>In just 100 days, starting on 7 April 1994, more than 800,000 Rwandans were killed \u2013 an average of over 8,000 people a day, more than 30 in the time allocated to this very ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The Tutsis were decimated. Those who opposed the genocide, including Hutus, were also targeted and killed.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds and thousands of people were orphaned, widowed, raped, injured or forcibly displaced.<\/p>\n<p>The international community watched in horror, but we did not prevent the atrocities.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"250\" src=\"\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/1362235914001\/B1J3DDQJf_default\/index.html?videoId=6025611262001\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->[\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The years that followed saw local, national and international efforts to address the legacy of this tragedy, from peace education initiatives to trials in national courts, at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and through the Gacaca community justice system.<\/p>\n<p>But these years also saw heated discussion about what the international community should have done to prevent the genocide, what it should do in the future as well.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; author=&#8221;Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa Garc\u00e9s&#8221; portrait_url=&#8221;https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2018\/09\/PGA-73084-e1537294481964.jpg&#8221; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; job_title=&#8221;President of the UN General Assembly&#8221; quote_icon_background_color=&#8221;#f5f5f5&#8243; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; quote_icon_color=&#8221;#00aff8&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">We are here today to mourn and to remember, but also to reflect and learn. But the stain on our conscience remains \u2013 there have been many tragedies since.<\/p>\n<p>So as we light candles this morning, let us also rekindle our efforts to realize our promise of \u201cnever again\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Let us condemn all forms and manifestations of the denial of genocide. Let us invest in education to enshrine the lessons of our past in future generations. Let us redouble our efforts to fight hate speech, and call out those who dehumanize others.<\/p>\n<p>And let us work to implement our responsibility to prevent \u2013 by addressing the root causes of conflict, by acting on early-warning signs such as human rights violations, by supporting the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, and by increasing our efforts to build and sustain peace.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>We are here today to mourn and to remember, but also to reflect and learn.
